Sanding Disc Arbors

Sanding Disc Arbors
I noticed the newer sanding disc arbors are longer to accommodate the 510/520 models - any reason these longer arbors wouldn't work fine on a 500?
I use one on my 500 with no problem. Since I only bring it up to the table side.

My 1989 model 500 came with the longer hub. Since the sanding discs, short or long hub do not fit the lower guards of the 500. Sanding is done on the edge of the table so there should be no issues using either on the 500. SS markets a sanding guard that is basically a stripped down 510/520 lower guard. The sanding guard also must be used on the edge of the 500 table.
If it were me, I would buy the longer hubs so that if I upgraded to a 510/520/7 I could continue to use the discs with the newer guards.

As long as your using it up against the table. The only thing I can think of is a somewhat shorter length ya can sand using the fence.

One diference has to do with the lower saw guard, which can be used for dust collection. 500 lower saw guard works with 500 style arbors on the sanding disk. Longer arbors are suited for the 505/510/520 style guard. if you aren't using the lower saw guard for dust collection then it doesn't matter much.

I am now sure the 12" disc will not fit inside a 500 lower guard.damagi wrote:One diference has to do with the lower saw guard, which can be used for dust collection. 500 lower saw guard works with 500 style arbors on the sanding disk. sanding disc and 500
The sanding disc will not fit into the 500 lower blade guard. A couple of years ago i bought the 510-520 lower guard to use with sanding disc.
Works great for dust collection but, can only be used on edge of table.
dust port of lower guard hits on table upright because 500 is narrower table.
I like using the edge of table because it gives you more table to keep workpiece flat to table. could be used in center of table with the 510 or520
