Scrollsaw Blades in the Jigsaw?

Post by algale »

Has anyone tried using scrollsaw blades in the jigsaw? If so, what's the finest/smallest scrollsaw blade you have successfully used in the jigsaw?

Also, anyone have experience with "Scroll Sanders"? http://www.woodcraft.com/product/200027 ... -pack.aspx

Thanks,

Al

Blades

Post by rcoder »

That is all I have ever used in mine. I have used both pinned and pin less (have to drive the pins out). Last year I did have to put a helicoil in the lower holder. I suppose too many times loosening and tightening. Two years ago I replaced seals and bearings. I consider it equal to many of the more expensive scroll saws.

Yes scroll saw blades work in the jigsaw. Of the ones I have tried so far I like the Olson PGT No. 9RG double reverse tooth blades the best, very smooth cuts.

My wife took a Welsh Love Spoon carving workshop at our local Lee Valley store this October, (she was born in Wales) and is enjoying carving them very much.

I cut out the blanks on my 10ER jigsaw, so far we have been using basswood and a mahogany looking wood that I reclaimed from a pallet.

Here is a picture of the one she is working on now, our most ambitious to date.

She draws the pattern on tracing paper and I put it on the wood with spray adhesive, you can see where it lifted at some of the edges.

I have been looking at the Scroll Sanders but haven't tried them yet. Also I just noticed these Scroll Saw Filesthat look interesting.

I bought some of the scroll sanders from woodcraft to pad out an order to justify the shipping charge. Haven't gotten around to using them yet.

I purchased the scroll sanders years ago, out of the package of 5 I still have one. I really didn't like them. If your scrolling fine work, using a #2 or a 2/0 blade there is no room for that type of sanding, it just cuts out the fine points and sharp angles you have worked so hard to establish. If the openings are large just pulling a thin piece of sandpaper does the job just fine. On outside cuts there are so many options.
Maybe I didn't give the sanding bars enough of a try, but I personally do just as well slowing the blade speed and pressuring the blade against the cut. I have a collection of micro rasps, picked up over the years, and like I said before, I like to slowly pull thin strips of sandpaper, much thinner than the sanding bars, through my fine cuts.
This Owl is a project I just finished as a Christmas present for one of my daughters. I can't imagine using a sanding stick on the fine cuts.

Not sure if it's better to hijack this one or start a new one, but...

Has anyone been able to use the spiral scroll saw blades in the jigsaw? I was trying to cut some inside curves and they were too tight for my bandsaw so I got a pack of spiral blades and tried the jigsaw. No success yet. I've got the upper part all the way up to provide maximum tension and the blade still flexes badly. And I had to back the guide blocks out since the blade has teeth all the way around so that probably didn't help.

Any suggestions?
