Dust Collector..cleaning the filter

I have a DC3300 with the smallest filter bag. Cake dust builds up when I use the sanding disc, and my initial thought was "Gotta clean it out, so I can improve airflow!"

I just read on another site that others call this "Healthy cake dust" because it blocks the pours of the filter, it enhances the filtration. I am just getting my feet wet with woodworking, and really have not had to do anything to the DC3300. The lower plastic bag does not seem to fill up fast at all with the few hours I use it a month, and the simple stuff I have been using it for.

So, what advice do you mentors here have for us rookies. Also, that dust collector sure would be more effective if I remembered to turn it on every time I flick the switch of the Mark V. A better design for my would have been to have control of the DC3300 from the control panal of the Mark V. I have no permanent setup for dust collection...it just rolls around like the Mark V in my small shop.

As read in the above link to the SS PDF. The dust hood eventually gets clogged with fine dust. I tried washing once - wife didn't approve. Thereafter I removed the tightening belt and beat it with an old fashioned rug beater. Also sometimes smacked it up against a block wall until no more dust showed on the wall.

Still - if you can afford a larger hood - by all means get one. Results will be more air movement and lesser cleaning schedule.

On page 6 of that PDF it shows this. It looks like it would suck up more chips and dust. I can't see how it is hooked up. Does Shopsmith have a guard with two outlets?

I believe that the two outlets were on one of the old 500 lower saw guards

I bought an extra remote for my remote switch. I have them mounted in convenient locations in my shop. Another option would be to clip it to your shop apron, or hang around your neck. Yes the largest bag is the best solution for clean air and highest volume of dust removal. Jim

Yes, one of the older lower saw guards provided two outlets. A second outlet, properly located, would help the current lower saw guard.
