510's don't go for anything close to that here. Idiots post them for $2500 all the time. The cheapest 510 I have seen here was $850 :(

I have a 505 that I'm almost done doing a full restoration and would love to find the 510 tables for cheap. Even better I'd love to find a 510 and turn my 505 into a shorty.

I kind of have the same question as the OP.
There's 510 listed on CL here for $650. The ad says it has a bandsawm joiner and other attachments and goodies. I called on it, and the fellows wife said he had inherited it from his father, and didn't have room for it. The fellow was out fishing, and is supposed to call me this evening. Is $650 fair, with the aforementioned accessories?

That doesn't look like a 510. Its a 500.

Not being that familiar with models and their capabilities, this is the predecessor to the 510, then? Still a decent buy to get started with?

I'm sorry; I don't know what the market is like out there. Different parts of the country seem to get different prices.

Just talked to the seller. It has all the gouges, chisels and tailstock for the lathe, bandsaw, joiner, various bits and extra blades, router bits and cutters. From the picture, it looks like a plethora of parts. I spotted a 10" disk sander, and miter gauge.

All the 'blue' items are standard. The bandsaw has the older CI table. The jointer is not in de pix.

Assuming good condition, the bandsaw is worth a couple hundred and the jointer 150. That leaves 300 for the base machine.

650 is probably a bit high, but local conditions do vary. It is however a good starting point for 'haggling'.;)

What is not known, is if there are any golden eggs in de box.

teamvertical wrote:I am hoping this forum could help me out. Could you look at this add and let me know from the photo's how this looks. I have read most of the articles on purchasing a used SS. According to the owner he only has what is in the photos. I think it looks to be a 510 model, is that correct? The serial number is 022688 - is that a 1987 model? Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Thanks from a new guy

I was actually fantasizing about picking that one up as a number 2... then I went out into my shop and realized I don't have the room for a number 2. :(

It is a 510 as previously mentioned, and I believe you can get it for a good price. If it were me, I would offer him 150, but be willing to negotiate up to 275 or 300...depending on your budget.

Hope this helps

Well I might have hesitated to long. After looking at it I was not sure if I could lift the headstock due to my condition of MD. So I let the owner know I would let him know on Sunday which I did and passed on this. Well after sleeping on it I said to myself that this condition is not going to win and called him back. Well I am third in line for it this weekend. I am sure it will be gone. I can be an idiot sometimes. But maybe I will be lucky and the others pass on it. We shall see.
