Buy a used quill feed assembly that has the spring already hooked and working. Contact me if you are unable to find one.

I have been unable to successfully drill/remove a broken pin and install a new one. The new pin would always pull out after a few tries. It is not worth the effort as used ones are fairly cheap. Rehooking the spring can be a problem and can cause damage to your fingers if you are not careful. Drilling a hole all the way through the shaft and tapping the hole for a screw did work but was a lot of work.

Bummer, I wish I would have known that before I bought the new spring and housing...

And I waited 10 days for shipping. I was hoping to have this thing humming this weekend.

Or do you just replace the housing with spring already installed. How do you rewind the spring if you were to remove it. Or is that even possible  I don't see any problem with the spring not working other than in drill press mode it might take more effort to raise the quill. Since I'm going to use it as a lathe and Jig saw it won't be an issue I don't think. Am I missing anything here?
The quill return spring is a convenience for anyone drilling with the Shopsmith. Not really a requirement. I have a converted drilling/tapping/milling Shopsmith without the quill return spring so I can control any adjustment without the quill springing back into the headstock. I use the quill lock handle to help keep the quill at the position I need. I do not find it is a problem even when only drilling holes, just keep the quill lock handle a little snug and your hand on the quill feed handle to control/position the quill. Helps prevents quill side play too.

One of my 10ERs came with a broken return spring.

I drilled new holes, one the size of the retaining pin head and one the size of the shaft, slightly overlapping.

I left the points where the two holes meet so there was a bit of a snap when it went onto the pin. The spring drilled easily and I don't remember it being that hard to reinstall, the 10er spring is more accessible than the one on the Mk5/V.

A fairly easy fix and the price is right:).

QUICK!! Phone Shopsmith and tell them your story. You may be able to return your part(s) - get full credit - and get the right part with only the phone call.

If that doesn't work, get in touch with Bill Mayo:D He'll help out:)

Sorry, won't work for this weekend, but....:)

Did you uncoil the spring outside of the housing or just pull out enough to drill the new holes? I have visions of it unwinding in an explosion and taking out my nose in the process as you remove it from the housing

I took it out of the housing, the coil will get a bit larger but there isn't a lot of tension on it.

I put it back together with the old spring housing. I will worry about this later. I just needed to see my cleaned up machine running.

Thanks everyone for all the info.
