Wow, what a mess. That's the thing I like about this forum - civility.

I've wondered over to Woodnet and got a bit disillusioned with the way people are there. The regulars often seem to gang up on other and it appears that Lumberjocks can be the same.

The final straw for me on Woodnet was when a person was asking for help making a raised bed platform and one of the regulars basically told them to give up that they didn't have the ability to do it. The person started the thread saying he was lacking experience, but he wasn't a new woodworker and had some high-school wood shop experience. Then the regular member basically insulted anyone who encouraged the OP.

I'll throw out a R4512 from Ridgid as a cheap, but decent table saw. Usually goes for $500 or if you get them to take a Harbor Freight coupon, around $400. It has the weight, 250lbs, cast iron on the main table, easy move casters. A decent, but not perfect fence and decent dust collection with a enclosed base that keeps the sound level down. I believe it has an induction motor too, which is quieter than the universal motor used in a lot of the portable saws.

And here I thought mechanic forums could be catty. I'm on a couple of those, but found it wasn't worth trying to help people because you have others on there just looking to start conflicts. And if you ask a question that really needs to be answered by one of the few resident experts, you always get the rif raf with that "did you use the search function and see this unrelated question that was never fully answered from 8 years ago?"

Hahahahah, I love those comments. Besides, if everyone only used the search function, the forums would die off from lack of new content. Forums vs archive

If you like forums with a high percentage of ding-a-lings try hanging out on horse forums.

I tried several of them but finally gave up on them. Too many young women that call a slap on the rump (to the horse

) abusive and that think that a horse should only be kept in the living room and never get rained on. A lot of variation of opinions is fully normal but the extreme twits mess it up for everybody.

I just couldn't resist adding one more at LJ's. I've been on that site for a long time. (no so much lately) Every now & then things get a little nutty. In the past, I've blogged there on Shopsmiths. That's always good for some lively discussion.

One year I was struggling to find a Spring project locally, and settled on an 83 Porsche 944 which is the absolute cheapest, most wannabe Porsche ever made. I think the percent of dingalings on the repair forum would give the PETA freaks a run for their money.

I enjoyed the challenge of working on something people claim is sooooo complicated (it wasn't), and also like to brag I rebuilt the motor and brakes, including machine shop work, for under $300 when yuppies drop thousands. But there are some communities in the "never again" column and that is at the top of the list.

When FWW forum was having trouble some folks went to The Burl. I tried that and many of the responses to legitimate question were infantile. So I deleted the link to it from my browser.
So glad this forum is civil. Maybe we should recommend it to all politicians as an example of how to behave in public!

Well, I hope to be excused that facetious remark, but this is 'Community' forum isn't it?

I sometimes wonder if the anonymity of the Internet isn't one of the worst things to happen to civility. As a newer user I appreciate how much help and general neighborliness there is on this forum. I think a lot of credit goes to some of the more senior members ( dusty, JPG, Don, and several others). You guys do a great job of setting a positive tone, thanks for that.

MrHart I'd love to be able to help answer your LJ question here but the only table saw I own is the SS. I feel a little awkward reaching over the table because of it's height also. I was thinking about building a platform to place in front of the machine when I am using it as a saw. I even thought about making it usable as storage and just rolling the machine over it when not in use and rolling the machine back when I needed to stand on it.
