I hope I'm wrong but.... Lift assist issue

Post by reible »

Here is how it goes. I got a powerpro lift assist. From my understanding it would still allow 2 of the 3 red cabinets shopsmith use to sell.... that does not seem to be true.

I got my package in yesterday but did not have time until about 6:00 tonight to work on it. Things seem to go along smooth enough and I got it put together and adjusted. It moves up and down nicely and all was well until the cabinets were to go back under it.

I've got a no go situation. We are talking more then just a little interference, I'd say more like inches. (Ran out of light and time but I can measure and take pictures tomorrow.)

I can't really see how I could have messed this up, the parts go where the parts go and it does work.

My question is, does anyone here have the new dual tilt and a pair of the old red cabinets working together?

Look in the SS catalog and I think that it states that only two of the cabinets will fit when the lift assist is installed.

I think Ed realizes that. Reread his post (first line).

With either lift assist, only 2 cabinets will fit under the Mark V.

The double-tilt should not affect anything, the height of the tubes doesn't change.

You may want to call Customer Service (1-800-543-7586) to help diagnose the issue.

I don't have the cabinets and I have the lift assist installed on a Mark V (not a Mark 7) but when looking at installation, I don't see how you could possibly install in a way the would CAUSE interference that would not be there otherwise.

What is the sum total width of the two narrowest cabinets when placed side by side.

If greater than 30 1/2", they would not fit under my Mark V.

I waited too long to order those cabinets. About the time I was ready to order, they had been discontinued. I wish they still sold them.

This is my follow up with pictures.

Got out to work on it and take a few pictures and some measurements. And I have not yet contacted shopsmith about the issues.

First Dusty had mentioned the width of the two cabinets when side by side. I measure 31-5/8 without the hinge bits which hang past that. His number is 30-1/2, or in his words "If greater than 30 1/2", they would not fit under my Mark V."

Next I had a little go at trying to get them to fit again, just in case I was doing something wrong last night. I might have been using the wrong method in that I was attempting to roll the cabinets under the machine. When doing so you need some wiggle room to get them in place so it appeared things were worse then they really are.......... but no they still do not fit.

This is test one, machine is up on the highest position of lift by the casters. The machine is sitting on flat section of floor. I have the cabinets in paint scrapping closeness to the end (you would need more room to move them so this is not practical). BTW I did scrape paint.

With the cabinets square to the leg end this is the shot of the lift assist resting on the cabinets.

Keep in mind the cabinet had been placed first before dropping the headstock down. This is also an arc so what you are seeing is the lift hitting before it can reach its rest/lock down position. The measurement at this point is 7/8".

A few things may have changed since you purchased your lift assembly or perhaps you don't have the pro version. In order to use the dual tilt you need to remove the one end of the gas cylinder. There is now a quick connect/disconnect the lets you pop it on and off. In order to locate the ball stud and the connector you need to move either the top or bottom mounting position. When I adjusted mine for a good fit it meant the top mounting, the one that positions the arm, to no longer be against the end. This moves the arm in the wrong direction cabinet wise. It looks to be about 3/8".

Even if I had the 3/8" back it is unlikely to fit.

Well I got some other things I have to take care of so I'll let you review what I posted and I'll try and call shopsmith tomorrow to see what they have to say.

Just got off the phone with shopsmith. It looks like they can not get it to work either.

I believe they are going to update the web page to reflect that two cabinets don't fit.

So if you are interested in the lift assist and have the red cabinets beware you like me will have to find another solution.....

If any other news comes up I'll let you know.

By the way if any of you are at a Lowes demo with Mike Young please let him know the guy that bought the lift assist in Rockford just found out that two cabinets do NOT fit.

I would imagine since it's a "beefier" lift assist, that would explain the problem. I took my cabinets and bolted them together vertically.

Go back to Dusty's post #5 and read the fine print. "Only one cabinet will fit if the cabinets have casters".:(
