It has nothing to do with the lift assist being beefier. I have pone of the earlier models lift assist and I would not have room for two chests under mine either.
The chests are each 16" wide. There is only 30 1/2" of open space where the chests would be.

This looks to be a long standing error, the 2005 catalog has the two cabinet note and no mention of having to remove the casters to do that. The cabinets had no mention of restrictions.
I don't have many options at this time, so for now I have pulled the pins making them into two independent cabinets. The one closes end I left turned with the drawers facing front. The second cabinet I rotated 90 degrees and the drawers now face the other end of the shopsmith. Not as convenient but at least are out of the way.
