After you draw the arcs you put a line on the strip, this is half the distance between end points.

Add a few reference numbers.

Using the same process you can subdivide the line in to many parts, each line being half the distance of the one before.

Very nice work, Ed! I had never thought about it before, but the divider technique probably explains why the fractional system came first .. and remains extremely popular to this day, at least in the Imperial (English) system.
Personally, I find decimals easier. And on top of that, my dial calipers are decimal, so it's a no-brainer for me to choose the decimal tape. Well, half-brainer, anyway.
Yet I must still a bit of a traditionalist. I purposely bought my dial calipers graduated in English units, not metric. Metric is easier in most ways, but after all these years I still don't have a gut-level feel for it. It's swell for computer programming, but I prefer the English system for hands-on work.
And BTW, dial calipers are my distinct personal preference over digital ones, even though the digital ones can easily switch between English and metric systems. The reason is that dial calipers give an analog (read "intuitive") indication of relative dimensions, whilst digital one require me to strain my brain doing subtraction to achieve a similar/inferior understanding.

I plan to trim the strips so that their height fits on just the smooth area. The laminating process is so that I can make a mark on either using a dry erase pen and then wipe off that mark when finished.
I did try using my OLD Craftsman calipers, however they are very unreliable and difficult to read (more like decipher) with these eyes
Reible's "back to basics" method gave me an idea to just use a thicker paper (to adjust and account for the back layer of laminating plastic), then create the inch markings, cut it narrow and laminate.
Another alternative is to just take it to a shop and have vertical grooves cut around the circumference and fill the grooves with bright enamel paint. It might take less time than trying to get the plastic strips to come to fruition!
