pedal switch on shopsmith

pedal switch on shopsmith

Does anyone use a momentary/pedal pedal switch on a shopsmith?

There are obviously problems if it shuts off at high speed, but how else does it work. Was considering adding one for when I am turning things so that would be low speed.

I think that would be 'reasonable', but why? The 'normal' switch is close at hand, and so be your hand.

You add the possibility of inadvertently stepping on the switch and starting it when not intended.

One thing I like about the PowerPro is it stops immediately by itself if you get a jam or hung up on a turning. There is a very quick squeak from the belt in some cases but most of the time it just stops until the jam is cleared.

I was leaning towards a dead switch that would cut power if I lifted my foot off. The power pro is great, but it is about 100 times more expensive than the standalone switch. I am just starting out turning and I find myself turning the lathe on and off a lot to look at my progress/measure/etc.

I haven't found a need for foot switch over the past 30+ years I have been using my Shopsmith. I find I walk around moving stock to be able to keep my foot in one place. Instead, I installed a large "stop" switch to my headstock and find it very easy to turn it on and off when needed.

A foot switch and turning are not a good idea. You will find that you often need to adjust your footing to get the correct tool positioning, especially for bowls. Not to mention being in a static position to operate the switch for long sessions could get tiring. Use the switch or rig a remote as Animus has described.

If you think reaching for the power switch is 'inconvenient', try adding a foot switch (deadman or toggle) to a power pro.:eek::D
