Good stuff! I assumed there were bearings on the idler shaft. Interesting to know that it simply floats. No wonder the manual made such a big deal about belt tension.

Yea, to be more precise, it only floats up and down with varying loads on the belts from turning or drilling.
You were right about the belts having a set in them. I think that is why there was so much movement up and down on the idler shaft even with the speed reducer unloaded. The belt in effect was tightening and loosening as it was going around the sheeves.
. The idler sheeve has 2 needle bearings pressed in either end and can float side to side on the idler shaft. When the belts jumped grooves on the upper sheeves, that forced the idler sheeve, which floats side to side and turns freely, to follow the belts into the output case side.

A better look at the metal damage on inside of reducer case.

Ordered belt assembly (2 matched belts) and a spare coupling today. Will not know the status of the order until sometime Tuesday.
Only sales people working today, no warehouse help. They weren't able to tell me if my parts are in the warehouse or not.

Belt order update
Received my belt order last Friday. Only received 1 belt and the spare coupler.
Called customer service this morning, they saw the error and are shipping out a new order. Apparently, the matched set of belts is done in-house. They physically measure and match up 2 equal length belts before shipping out.
The 2 belts are then zip-tied together and packaged.
I got 1 belt and an unused zip-tie.
Well, I now have a new belt for the headstock for when I tear into that.....soon.
That is worth the wait!
