Why do you all look to the expensive types when transmission oil is all I have had in mine for some 20 yrs. It still runs fine. Much less expensive especially since a leaky transmission requires that I keep some around.

Not all that confident with it's lubricating properties and nylon compatibility.
I will stick with lubricating products.

Back in the older days it was common to add a quart of transmission oil to help clean the engine, i.e. it was high detergent. I remember doing this after a head gasket leak that got water in the oil. While this was some years back and I haven't looked at modern transmission fluid I'd check that out before filling the jig saw.
My jig saw is 37 years old and has never had any problems, I've use a straight wt oil in it for many many years until I could no longer find it on shelf. I have since gone to air compressor oil for the last few fills. I believe it was Bill Mayo that hand mentioned going that route some years back.
At 3 oz per fill a pint is good for 5 fills and I believe I paid about $5 for it so a $1 per change is pretty cheap maintainance, at least cheap enough for me.

A detergent oil is designed to keep dirt and wear particles suspended in the oil so that it is picked up by the filter.
Since a SS jigsaw does not have a filter to cleanse the oil, you want contaminants to drop out of the oil and settle at the bottom of the crankcase where it can't do any harm. So a non-detergent is recommended by the engineers.
Being an auto tech, I tend to follow recommended procedures and standards.
But hey, that's just me!
