It's been a while......

since I made anything worth talking about but this is my latest project. My granddaughter wanted a night stand for her bedroom as a birthday present. Since we could not find one at a price we wanted to pay, I said I would make one. That was back in June, as was her birthday.

It is based on the plans from a fancy vegetable bin I made a couple of years ago, and modified to be smaller and have a door.

Those of you who may remember some of my "weekly blog" posts of a few years ago would also remember that I don't do anything the easy way.

This was no exception. I won't bore you with all of the details, but since my face frame openings were not exactly square, both the drawer and door required a fair bit of adjustment to get them to fit.

Now all we need to do is find a way to get it to her in Niagara Falls, several hundred miles away.

Sorry for the picture quality. An angled view would have shown the face frame extends about 1/4 inch over the side to give it a better look.

Atta Boy, John! Yes, it's been a while, but both of are still here:)

Super nice work on that night stand! As always, your verbage is a bit understated, however that little cabinet is a beauty! Can't see a thing out of square.

Me too! can't make anything perfectly square, just have to "fit" the pieces.

You are right, the picture doesn't really show it out of square, until you try to fit the pieces. Actually the door is version #2. The first one had door frame pieces that were only 1.25" wide and by the time I "adjusted for the error", the top and bottom pieces were visually narrower at opposite ends. The new frame is wider and cut differently so the difference doesn't show as much.

I won`t mention the error on the panel as I am too embarrassed about that one.

The drawer had similar problems but not as bad.

Some year I may get it right.

Looks like you got it right already!

I was wondering what you used to paint the chest. Did you find a use for that HVLP sprayer? Hoping that after a couple of trials, it is working for you.

I tried the sprayer for the primer coat with poor results. I had trouble thinning the paint so it went on somewhat in drops. After sanding down with sanding pads I had the smooth surface that I wanted but decided to finish with a brush and roller for the final two coats. Of course rollers don't leave a real smooth factory type finish like I had hoped for but I was running out of patience.

All finishes were latex and I think the sprayer is more geared to oil or urethane type finishes. Hopefully someday I will take the time to experiment and get a technique down pat.

Oh Darn! I used latex on my shutters. As I remember, thinned to about 1/3 water and then screwed the needle in so a very fine spray. Worked pretty well and it was easy clean-up. I got two nozzles and two needles with my unit. Used the smaller of the two.
