THANK YOU Dusty - my spring project

Post by benush26 »

I have to say that SketchUp often causes me to pull out the few strands of hair I have left and add more wrinkles where the were already plenty, but thanks to Dusty and his encouragement I have a spring project.

The top will be 2 layers 3/4" MDF with one layer hardboard so I can replace it as it wears (wrapped in oak), but most of the rest is some 4x4 posts, 2by and scraps I have laying around. The big ticket will be the vices. The barely perceptible gap at the back is a tool trough and the drawers are still a construction thought in progress (just know the size not the materials). The large gap between the top and drawers is to accommodate holdfasts. There are no feet as they will be a custom height when I decide the appropriate height of the top surface.

I've never had a proper bench and was not ever certain I would, but Dusty gave me the confidence to pursue Sketchup. I built this in an exploded fashion so that I could "assemble" it and found a couple errors and was able to rectify before creating a cut list.

So Dusty, if the computer gremlins are gone and you are still able to get to this forum THANK YOU!!

Ben

And yes, I know there is no handle nor opening on the big drawer. I tried but it's a component/group thing and I wasn't going to take the tiime to explode it to fix it ir redraw or ??? But I do know that I will have some fashion to open it

Wow, congrats on the Sketchup skills! Very nice work.

Woodworking vises don't have to cost a fortune if you keep your eyes open for some good vintage iron, at least here in Ohio. Many guys think the vintage iron is better than anything you can buy today.

I bought the twin of this one from the same guy, same price: http://columbus.craigslist.org/tls/4039915384.html. Reputedly a private label manufactured by Columbian. And also scored a Columbian from eBay for not much more.

More often than not, Wiltons and/or Columbians are available for under $50 within about an hours drive of Columbus.

And here's a recent post that looks like a good deal on newer iron: http://columbus.craigslist.org/tls/4111828400.html

Good hunting!

Wow! That's an understatement. I have never put out a set of Sketchup drawings that look that good.

I think that you probably now have a second hobby (in addition to wood working). I find myself just doodling with Sketchup just to see what I can do with it. It looks as though you have progressed way beyond my doodling stages.

Now I'll be looking forward to seeing a progress report on the work bench (new thread).

Good of you to post this, very interesting.
As the others already mentioned it, I can't wait to see the real thing in realisation. (As Dusty said : new thread coming )

:o
Thanks, but all I did was make some fake pieces of wood and create fake dados and such. And slap it together in fake space. I didn't make the vises. I just copied them from the Trimble site. You all realize that, right?

Dusty, I have seen your work and it is definitely significantly more than doodling!! :p :p

Dennis, your thoughts had me gleaning the internet tonight, looking for anything resembling a bargain, but none such exist near Montana at the moment. However, I will keep looking.

A friend has the Sjoberg mega bench and told me the style of vises to look for. With your idea that I might be able to score some older "classics", I'll spend the winter looking and may just see if I can buy one in Ohio and have it sent.

I promise that when the snow has left the ground for the spring here in Montana (has yet to arrive for winter, but it will show up    ) and after it's gone, the first project is the bench. With a new posting/

Thanks fir all the kind words! My ego really gets stroked on this site.

Be well,

Ben
