Glad you answered that 'cause I realize I made a huge error before in not stating that I have a positive and abiding respect for a lot of people who use that device (Brit Hume, for instance). But like I said I just don't understand it, usually (yours I now do).

I may be beating a dead horse here, but I just wanted to share Moody's (one of the agencies that gives the US and other countries credit ratings) statement on the debt ceiling debate, which backs up what I've been saying:

With negotiations over the ongoing government shutdown quickly drawing in the looming debt-ceiling standoff, Moody’s says the U.S. doesn’t necessarily have to default on its debt right away even if the debt ceiling isn’t raised by the Oct. 17 deadline. Here’s Steven Hess of Moody’s in the rating agency’s latest credit outlook:

We believe the government would continue to pay interest and principal on its debt even in the event that the debt limit is not raised, leaving its creditworthiness intact. The debt limit restricts government expenditures to the amount of its incoming revenues; it does not prohibit the government from servicing its debt. There is no direct connection between the debt limit (actually the exhaustion of the Treasury’s extraordinary measures to raise funds) and a default.

Hess notes that interest payments on Treasury bonds and notes are due twice monthly, on the 15th and the last day of every month, so after October 17 the first interest payment is a relatively small $5.9 billion payment due Oct. 31, and the next is a larger $30.9 billion payment due November 15. He also points out that only debt interest payments are potentially affected, not principal:

The statutory debt limit is a limit on the amount of debt outstanding. As debt matures, it can be refinanced with new Treasury issuance without affecting the total amount of debt (principal). Interest, by contrast, is an expenditure and could be included among the expenses that the Treasury could decide not to pay.

And in case you were wondering if Washington is having more trouble reaching an agreement this year than it did during a similar battle two years ago because the amounts involved are larger this time around – nope, it’s just pure intransigence:

Is the situation worse now than it was in 2011, the last time that the debt limit was an issue? No. The budget deficit was considerably larger in 2011 than it is currently, so the magnitude of the necessary spending cuts needed after 17 October is lower now than it was then.

OK, I'm sitting here, listening to the President.

When he was speaking off of the Teleprompter, he was doing REAL GOOD! Except for a single mis-speak, of the "corpse-man" (corpsman) variety. He referred to the Governor of Ohio as "Ka-sich" instead of being pronounced "Ka-sick." It seems that his Punahou schooling wasn't all that good.

Now,he's off the teleprompter, and it's REAL EASY to just hear this. He is tap dancing around "if you want to keep your health care, you CAN KEEP your health care" statement. Isn't doing very well at it.

I don't remember where I heard it, but someone said they miss W because his screw ups were out in the open. No one is perfect, I think things would be better (or more palatable) if the current govt would stop trying to convince us otherwise. I swear no one in our govt has made a mistake in 5 years if you listen to them.

What this means is that in the time we were attacked at Pearl Harbor to the day Germany surrendered is not enough time for this federal government to build a working webpage.

Mobilization of millions, building tens of thousands of tanks, planes, jeeps, subs, cruisers, destroyers, torpedoes, millions upon millions of guns, bombs, ammo, etc. Turning the tide in North Africa, Invading Italy, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Race to Berlin - all while we were also fighting the Japanese in the Pacific and building the Atomic Bomb!!

BUT they can't build a webpage.

Of course FDR did not hire one of Eleanor's college roommates to do it either!

And Fairchild and Vickers of Canada supplied us with aircraft during WWII - what's your point? I think it's well understood that when one says the feds build something, it means they sub it out.

Reagan. That's who I miss. For all the good and bad about him (and there's plenty of both).

And I hate to say it, but I also miss Clinton.
