Ideas to Attach Hollowing Rig to Tail Stock

Post by roy_okc »

I'm looking for ideas. I'm planning on letting my rich uncle in D.C. buy the ElboTool (www.elbotool.com) hollowing rig for me next month. It is designed to fit on a lathe's tail quill, which we lack on the SS.

Does anyone have any ideas for something that would fit in the MT#2 hole or even the larger hole? The minimum size is 7/8", not sure of the max size, maybe 1-1/2-2". Will the large hole accept a standard-sized piece of pipe?

I saw this demoed by its inventor last week at a local turners club meeting. He had hollow form newbies using it after less than a minute of instruction, each proclaiming how simple it is. With the laser and laser bracket (and paying attention), the inside should always remain smaller than the outside. Before seeing this, I was probably 2-3 years from giving any real attempt at turning a HF; with this, I see myself starting a couple hours after I get it in my hands.

Thanks in advance,
Roy

I emailed Stan Townsend and he is investigating the requirements for a Shopsmith mount for the Elbotool.

I sent an email in to Stan as well. Just received this back from him:

"Roy the maximum diameter with the current clamp is 2". I have a friend that owns a shopsmith and will see if I can adapt it to use the Elbo tool.Stan "

I got to thinking along the lines of mounting a SS tailstock arbor then attaching something larger to that, perhaps a Don Pencil buffing adapter or something along those lines.

Thanks,
Roy

If all you need is a #2 Morse Taper to ~1+" diameter by 2" long cylinder I think this will work.

It is a standard #2 Morse Taper to #2 Morse Taper extender. If you want the body bigger you can get a #2 to #3 adapter as well.

Roy - How about removing the tail cup center from the tail stock and finding a metal cylinder of the size to fit into the tail? Maybe you would have to find a local machine shop to turn you a piece. Shouldn't be too expensive.

Seems you can tighten the cylinder into the tail stock with the two allen screws. Should hold pretty well.

Paul, this looks like it might work. I have a email back to Stan.

Chuck, that was my first line of thinking (hoping that some standard pipe might fit it and not be too large).

I'll keep everyone posted with what I find out.

Thanks for the ideas, Roy

Morse taper to morse taper

Post by wa2crk »

Where was the morse #2 taper extension bought from?
I could use one for pen turning cuz the lift assist prevents my tool rest from getting close enough to the pen barrels. As a result I have to move the rest too far from the part being turned in order to prevent the lathe tool from falling off the end of the tool rest.

Bill- the morse #2 extension is available from Packard. You can also buy live center extenders from Shopsmith, it's a part associated with the SS lathe duplicator. Ask SS customer service. There's another thread on this forum which discusses the various options to deal with the lift-assist/turning issue.

Roy- Have you seen Nick's Sawdust Sessions on the Ringmaster, and one or two of the video tips on turning? Nick demonstrates the use of several parts of the lathe duplicator system which might be an alternative to the elbotool. I'm no engineer, but you might be able to hook up that laser guide system to the jig Nick was using without needing to anchor the whole thing to the tailstock.

You can get two Shopsmith extensers for a lot less, even with shipping. I have both versions and I can use them both together if I need to.

I think I got mine from Packard but you can Google them and fine lots of #2 Morse extensers from as low as $7 to well over $40 depending on where made.
