planer to sander

Post by farley »

I am lucky, I have an extra 12 inch planer which works perfect.

Has anybody ever hear of somebody changing one over to a surface sander?

TIA

Changing a thickness planer to a "surface planner"? Not sure I understand what that is.

Sorry I can,t edit the title....it should say " surface sander" . But it looks hard to do as my planer doesn,t have a round head.

OIC.
You would probably be better off selling the extra planer and use the funds towards buying a machine designed for surface sanding.

This sounds like a good idea.

Sanders are a whole different tool. This is especially true of the springs, in a planer they are quite strong and with a sander it is a lot weaker. That and attempting to make a drum and holding mechanism for the paper might be a lot harder then you think.

If you want a thickness sander it might be easier to make your own.

Check out the one Shipwright made Cheap Easy to Build Thickness Sander

and gr8mesquite's My Version of a Performax
and bhacken's Another thickness sander

and here is one on YouTube Shopsmith Thickness Sander

I am working on a V Drum sander for my 10ER right now, will post pictures when done.

Like he (ED) said!

IMO better to sell excess 12" planer and putting that $ toward a real, or homemade, thickness sander.
