Where were you 50 years ago?

I was in 8th grade math class which had gone on lunch break. We were sitting in the cafeteria and I remember the word of the assignation spread and nervous laughter filled the place. No one believed it until we went back to class and my math teacher made the sober announcement. We were then all stunned. I should add that Mr. Ravenscroft was our teacher.

I was a senior in high school. We were dismissed early. JFK speeches influenced me a lot and I loved this country. I live in Pa. (about 50 miles north of Phila) and had intensions to go to college. JFK influenced me to take my chances on the draft and not go to college. I had applied to Ursinus, Princeton, and Syracuse. When the acceptance letters came I never opened them and burned them cause I didn't want to know and sway my decision to serve my country. I was drafted and entered the Army in August 1966. When I got finished with active duty I tried Lehigh Univ. but when entering a class I saw a NVA flag and ripped it down. I was asked to leave and never went back or and have never attended any other school. I swore that my son would never serve this country since the draft dodgers where allowed to come back (Our class president went to Canada) and Jane Fonda was Never tried for treason.

I had just graduated for boot camp and was awaiting orders for IC "A" school which were delayed. I was walking across the grinder,parade ground, when it was announced on the base PA system.

Afternoon homeroom, Senior year of High School, Mineola, New York. Stunned for months afterwards...That event marked a really big change in the way I, and a lot of other Americans, thought about our world.
