Towards the end of this month it is quite possible I will have an E. bowl gouge in my shop.
Knowing this I started to look at various ways of sharpening them. I've found plenty of plans using grinding wheels and homemade jigs, of course several companies are more then willing to sell me, kits as well as pre-mades. I think there may have been some plans posted here as well.
What I'm thinking right now is that since I like the shopsmith strip sander with chisel sharpening attachment (55812) it might be possible to set that up to use. I know you need to have the ability to swing to the sides with the changing angle/arc etc.
So has anyone ever done this?
Other options like using the disk sander/strip sander sans attachments or other methods involving the shopsmith would be welcome.

Here are a couple you tube videos of jigs, I would think you could adapt them to work with the sanding disc by using the lathe tool rest as your base point and setting the jig into a shop built fixture that rode in the tool rest carriage.

I've got a tormek and the jig that they make to sharpen the gouges. It seems to me that if you didn't want to build a jig you could buy that one and adapt it to a bar mounted in the lathe tool rest pretty easily.

Glad I ask here rather then start designing something that has already been thought out. Now I have to get to the shop and take a look at how I want to do this on the strip sander.
I had not run into those Cap'n Eddie videos but in the last week I must have watched at least 20 of them. Mostly good stuff. I think he has like 200 videos so now I have something to do this winter.
Got the plans for his $2 jig, not so sure if I like the PVC so I might check the local stores for metal.

I had this issue of not knowing how I was going to sharpen my lath chisels, and wanting to be able to sharpen when turning, I came up with this idea. Having already had a bench grinder that died, I mounted one of the grinding wheels on a 1/2 inch bolt, cut off the head, then mounted that end of bolt in my 1/2 inch router chuck mounted on the left side upper drive shaft of shopsmith.
I then made an adjustable v that hooks over the rear way tubes and drops down over the front way tubes and locks in place. modeled after the wolverine grinding set up.
I won't be home for a couple days, but will try to take a couple pics and post.
Made entirely of scraps except the 1/2 inch bolt. It alloys me to sharpen as I'm turning without leaving the SS.
