So, I am almost done with these recipe boxes and the only hinges I could find local, and on short notice were these. My bride is not happy with them unless I mount them on the inside. They aren't very thick, do I screw them on flush or try and mortise them in at this late stage?
I should have thought this out a little sooner.
They are maybe 1/32 thick

How thick are the sides? I would mortise them IF the sides are thicker than the hinge leaf. If not I would look for smaller hinges. If SWMBO is the recipient, they could be added later.

One alternative for a concealed hinge would be a 10 mm barrel hinge. I used these on an earring case and they worked well. I have attached a page from the SOSS brochure.

I have purchased them in larger lots from Amazon and smaller lots from Zoro.

Definitely mortise them in. If you don't mind the work you can grind/sand some of their width off so you can actually move the pivot point inside the edge of the box. Then if you mortise them fully it will be concealed for all intent and purpose. You still have to allow for room for the lid to open but I have seen these inset to the point you could only see the hinge by looking at the back straight on and the barrel of the hinge could be seen recessed in a groove
