Gambling hardware style
I'm at the hardware store looking for some hardware. I need 8 of these, the cost off the rack is $.79 ea.

Simple math I go with 8 * 8 or some where near $6.40 minus... well how ever you do your math we are talking $6.32. But then I spot this grab bag of hardware and yes I can see at least some of the exact same parts in the bag.

The bag is $5 but will there be 8 of the parts I need? If say there are only 7 then if I take this bag home I will have to do a return trip to pick up another one. Well the drive will cost more then the possible saving but I'm not in a hurry for the parts so I could combine trips at another time.....
That is a 5 pound or so bag so at a $1 a pound this is still cheap hardware.
So do I gamble that I will find 8 of the parts I need or just buy the for sure number off the rack. As you can tell from the picture I went with the bag.
Was it a good gamble?
I'm going to open the bag and see, check back later for the results.

IIWM, I would buy both the bag and how ever many I think it is 'short' of 8.
Save my receipt and return any excess up to the number of contingency units purchased.
Assumes returns of the standard items are 'aok'.

It sounds like you are a little off on the subject of gambling, you do have the safe bet down pat.

OK the bag is empty, I have pictures and counts of what was in the bag minus a few that might have found refuse on the floor under something.
All the hardware is 1/4-20. The loose washers totaled 59 pieces.

Nuts amounted to 56 pieces

The next three pictures are of bolts, they are 3" long, first fully threaded group is 10, the next group is 39 parts, and last is the group of 52 with nuts and washers.

Next post we will see how well I did on the hardware I needed.

I'm sure the excitement is building but first lets see the "other contents"

Some of that may turn out to useless but still....
Now for the drum roll please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you can see I have the 8 I need and even a spare.
Now this is how you fill your shop with all sorts of hardware, pounds and pounds of it.
I was proud of myself for letting the other 4 bags remain in the store for someone else, got to stop hoarding the hardware deals.
