Time for a fresh porkchop? (Speed Changer)

While my motor is getting new bearings, I thought I'd give the entire headstock a going over, and I discovered that the "porkchop" has more wear than I could see through the access hole.

I know it is dirty, and I'll clean/lube it before reinstalling, but does the wear sufficient to justify replacement? (I suspect yes, but am unsure).

I would try cleaning it up with a file then post another pic. I'll bet you can salvage that one.

That looks pretty good to me.

Make sure the worm gear is centered on the teeth like the one the right when you reinstall it.

Mine was MUCH worse before I replaced it. Although, I probably should have replaced it sooner than I did.

To prevent a repeat of the damage, email Bill Mayo on the forum and he will send you his porkchop repair kit which replacesthe roll pin with a bolt and two star washers.

Nice job with the cleaning up the quadrant. I find I can recondition about 80% of the damaged quadrants and then, reposition the quadrant teeth so they are centered under the worm gear. This will place the worm gear teeth on an unused (not worn) area of the reconditioned quadrant teeth and works as good as installing a new quadrant. I find I have to bend one leg and some time the other leg just a little to center the quadrant. Light taps only as the speed control bracket legs are an alloy metal (pot metal) that cracks real easy.

YES, I am happy to mail you a #10-32 X 2 1/2" long hex head bolt, 2 star washers and nyloc nut at no cost to replace the rollpin. I will send instructions for this installation. My most successful modification for the headstock. More than 300 replacements in over 7 years with no reported failures since the installation at this time. I need an address but no PO Box please.
