Do you have anything like dental picks or O-ring picks? They might allow you to get a better prying device into that small opening. Since the hole is threaded, if you can get something in the hole you've made like a screw driver and attempt to unscrew, that might help.
As far as the guard removal, you can place a flat blade screw in that gap and "gently" twist to open that gap and the guard assembly should come off. Sounds like little or no maintenance was done by the previous owner.
Most here will tell you to get a tin of "original" Johnson Paste Wax. Just make certain it doesn't have silicone. It's therapeutic as you "wax on and wax off"
A suggestion as you read through this forum.... keep a note pad and pencil handy. These people have HUGE amounts of wisdom. I have a spiral bound notebook which condenses many scribbled notes from legal pads so I can refer back. I also have bookmarked threads of particular interest (especially when they get long).
Thanks Ben. I do keep a notebook handy and just from reading other posts I am starting to learn more everyday. I do not have any dental picks or O-Ring Picks and I have tried a very small flat blade screwdriver with no luck. I might have to keep trying. Never give up as it is in great condition just been sitting awhile. Only around 20 to 50 hours on the machine from what I was told. Never know on that though but from what I see of it it is very nice just needs some TLC Maintenance for Lubing things up again.

I have found that you can clean out the crud fro the set screw with a mini Philips screw driver or an eyeglass screwdriver. Take your time, you'll get there.
If picking at it does not work, you might try a drill bit in a hand held chuck. No drill motor - just by hand. start with a small bit and work your way up. Doing this by hand, you'll not damage the set screw but do be careful of the threads. You really do not want to screw them up.
Patience. Slow and deliberate. There is a set screw down there; believe me.

Thanks Chris I will have to give that a try and see what happens. After getting that allen screw out I know or think Shopsmith has them for replacement but they do not give the size of it and I was thinking if I needed to replace it that I might be able to get it locally. So if anyone can give me the size of the screw it would be appreciated too. Thanks.

Thanks Dusty. I am being very very patient as I know there is a screw in there. It is just getting it out. I believe you too Dusty. I know it is there. So would you suggest getting a new one if I get the one out and the Allen Hex Wrench will not fit it anymore then? If so that is why I was wondering what thread size it is? I know the head on the Allen Wrench I believe is 5/32 unless I am wrong on that. Thanks again.

Yes. By all means get a new one when you do finally get this one out.
