Ok whats the secret to removing the Velcro for the disc?

My used 510 came with a velcroized sanding disc worn in 3 concentric circles. My thought was that the PO tried to sharpen chisels, the velcro got too hot and melted.

Tried using GOOP as it had removed the glue from long deceased bumper stickers and decals. No luck. Left the disc in the sun and let it get HOT! Tried pulling up an edge! Yet nothing budged that plastic. Finally I got way past frustrated and decided to use the Oxy-Acetylene torch. NO I didn't but pulled out the MAPP torch and melted and scraped until the velcro was gone. Let it cool, removed the last of the adhesive with GOOP and mineral spirits.
If I was still working and got $1 an hour for my work (yes I know that means I was over paid!!), it would have been cheaper to buy a new steel disc!

At one time I did consider taking the belt sander to it.

And yet I still put the velcro on the disc for my M7. I really only use it for quick minor stuff. Pull out the orbital sander for most projects, though I'm trying to learn to use scrapers.

Bottom line... the velcro is like a diamond... it's there forever!

Ahh, but figuring it all out is half the fun! Come to think of it, that just might be the tie that binds us Shopsmith aficionados together ...

I sent an email to Doug Reid that basically said the same thing!!

The Shopsmith allows us to be tinkerers, inventors and solvers of problems! And that's before we build anything from wood!

I don't have the single quill feed handle but I do have a three handle drill press handle. So many details for a newbie.

Take two handles out of the hub. It will work. Don't lose them.

3 handle quill feed tip. My 3 handle came with black handles. I swapped out the one that tightens the hub to the shaft with a red one. It makes it easier to know which one it is.

Shopsmith steel with long(505-520) arbor.

Velcro is a personal 'preference'. I do not like it. But then I have several discs. The velcro is 'removable'.

The older aluminum discs and the shorter arbor will work, but only off the side of the table.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this opinion. I tried the velcro disc, a LONG time ago, and didn't like the finish.

If you want a nice soft corner, go with the velcro. If you want a sharp corner, stay clear of the velcro. The velcro puts a soft pad under the sandpaper, which rounds over edges nicely, unless you're sanding to do a glue joint.

About removal, why not try the old abrasion method. Mount the disc (without sandpaper), set the table near (not quite touching) it, turn the SS on, and get a piece of scrap wood, and start wearing off the velcro. Why do it by hand, when you've got a machine designed to do it?
