Mark 2 Rip Fence Refurb

Recently acquired a Mark 2 Rip fence to go with my Mark 2/5/home brew porta-smith.

Basically it is a mini version of a Mark 5 or Mark V 500. There are differences however in keeping with its design goal(low $$$$).

Here it is for reference as received.

And here is a major problem and it's cause. The clamping screw used a square nut. Both the nut and the rod are smushed.

After chasing the rod threads it looks much better and salvageable.

This will replace the nut to prevent the funky threads from doing a repeat performance.

Step one of reassembly is to start the front clamp tension pin. Take care to not let it protrude into the inside cavity(the clamp is a snug fit side to side).

Here you see the tension pin coming through the front clamp.

That was so much fun, we do it again for the rear clamp

Now for reassembling the clamping rod etc. Step one slip the sleeve on the rod. Notice the orientation. This sleeve presses against the front clamp(through a washer).

Do not fergit the washer!!!

Front spring bounded by two more washers. This spring is weaker than the rear one so that the front clamp moves first.

Moving on to the rear. I dropped one of the original washers(all 5 are identical) so I had to insert a furrin one until the original comes up fer air.

I added a flat washer between the rear clamp and the coupling nut since it is smaller that the original square nut. I will add a better pix of this at the end.

Adjustment for squaring the fence is flimsey at best IMHO. These screws were really really tightened when I took them out. I think that indicates holding square might be a problem. There is limited adjustment possible with the unique table front rail mounting.

Last the mortising hole screw is inserted.

Since the coupling nut can rotate(it doesn't until really torqueing the clamp screw handle), I added this crude pile of miscellaneous hardware until I come up with something better(like a knob etc.).

I will add a better pix of the added washer here after taking one. The washer needed to be filed on two sides(double d shape) so as to fit in the rear clamp cavity where the original square nut fit.

Notice the different shape of the front fence mount rail.

The small ridges are what registers against the front rail(only the two outer ones).

The rear clamp now has spiffier knob. The knob is not actually functional for normal use. It does allow manually preventing the coupling nut from rotating if needed.

Side view. Notice the small height and no holes for mounting side boards etc, but it does have the mortising hold down post mounting hole.

Here you can see the M2 clamp shaft slopes downward towards the rear. The Mark 5 rod is horizontal.

Nice thread with informative pics!

I have gotten spoiled with rip fences that tighten with levers, but the fence on my SS seems to be in good working order. I did not realize there were so many parts in there. I may try to figure out how to adapt this fence to the CI bandsaw table by fabricating a rail and an extension. And no Fernco rubber pieces this time!

I added 4 pix to this thread. I am gonna really like this new camera! Those 4 pix were taken in a very dark location without a flash. A little bit of reflected sunlight away from the pix area was all the illumination used. I am amazed at how it captured what little light was available. FWIW, the camera took about 4 shots each and compiled them into one pix. Also has a 24 - 1000 mm lens(35mm equivalent). That's 42x.

Yes indeed!

I went into the camera store with the intention of purchasing either a Nikon P600 or a Canon SX50 HS. I asked what the downside was to each camera(I already knew the positive propaganda). The specs are essentially identical. He obliged and then began to expose me to his personal preference. After about an hour I was convinced even though the $ were higher. Lo and Behold it was on sale and was priced between the Nikon and the Canon current sale prices.

Today the EXR mode setting really came through. I am amazed at the result. Depth of field was not to my liking, but then under that dim light, the aperture needed to be wide open(which I assume it was). In direct sunlight the pix are stunning. And image stability seems to be very effective.

I may become proficient in determining how to effectively use it in about a year(or longer). It has sub modes galore and real neat options and weird modes(panoramic pix by rotating the camera!) Wish I had that at the Grand Canyon.

I like the manual zoom(much faster and easier). Also has manual focus capability(limited range, useful for 'fine tuning'). Just gotta get used to the different controls.
