Sliding motrtise table

I purchased a multi-axis machinist vice and use it with Shopsmith T-nuts to hold it to the table in drill-press mode. You can then drill (Z-plane) to correct depth with a plunge router bit and then turn the crank to move the work horizontally in either the X or Y plane.

The hardest problem was getting the vise mounted so it does not move, I needed some bearings to adopt the larger holes in the vice to the small screws that go throught the nuts.

Maybe this will get SS or someone eles to make a table that can be purchased for a fair price. I looked at the one David Mark uses:eek: , my wife would kill me. Maybe I will just get the bead-lock kit.

The ultimate machine for what you are talking about is the woodrat. Its a 6 axis router table

A little pricey, but it knocks out those tenons and mortises faster than anything else I have seen.

An added bonus is that it will help you with all of your joinery as well.

I like it, half the price too!

The whole reason I bought the woodrat was to get ALL the joinery done with a LOT less hassle. Still getting up to speed on it, but I knocked out a mortise and tenon to see how easy it would be from the get go, and I was impressed. Now, on to blind dovetails!

I looked at some of the videos of the woodrat and it looks pretty interesting. The only thing I didn't like about it was the simple fact that it has to be mounted on a wall. I, probably make many others, don't have any free walls to put stuff like that on.

Maybe one day if Shopsmith gets frisky enough they can make their version of it. One can dream....

I didn't know what it was until I read this Thread. My 1955 Greenie SS Mark V 500, came with one. I was wondering what it was. I have only used a Router, and a homemade jig. The SS mortising attachment will save hours.
Every time I dig through the box that came with the SS it is just like Christmas all over again.
