I too as an engineer get fustrated with less then perfection in machinery and people. Other then the twist, panel glue joints are comonly not straight, but concave in the center 2/3rds of the length of the board, known as a spring board joint. the gab can be as much as a 32nd". When glued and clamped, it comes together putting opposite tension on the boards towards there ends and helps prevent any future checking at the ends.

It was 102 deg. in Boulder City NV when we left we are now in Oregon and they are predicting lows in the 30s. There is something wrong with this picture.

...t much easier, and thus more enjoyable, to machine the finished wood part to 0.005". Or to 1/64", for that matter, if that is your personal standard.....

My biggest problem in this area was in limiting scope of tolerance. Somehow I missed the "finished" thing and was just accepting the 10 to twenty thou "off", for everything. 10 thou in length, ah, okay. 14 thou off in width, all right. 13 thou per 3/4" edge of off-square, what da heck. And so on and so on, by the time I was ready for Watco Danish Oil the only way I could get the frame square was to press it between two motor vehicles. 13 thousandths per millimeter per fortnight squared--aaaaarrrgghhhhh...

But no more, and all it took was replacing about 75% of the Mark 5. Piec o cake.
