At this point in time I don't have a 500 length hub on any of my local disk sanders. I do have an old hub from the ones I had to replace but I'd rather not have to exchange them just for pictures.

If someone with a 505/510/520 and associated bottom guard, and, one of the sanding disks with the short hub could take some pictures for us that would be great. I'd like to see the sanding disk out far enough from the plastic that it could be used that way, then a shot of how close the hub come to fitting.

I'd like to see it in pictures rather then words but if you can't take a picture a verbose story will do.

Dust collection without the guard is not dust collection......

Agreed! Off the side disk sanding does not provide for DC.

Most of my disks are the thicker aluminum ones.

IIRC, the lower guard/disk guard will work off the side.

I do not have the SS sanding disk guard, but do have a 'converted' saw blade guard.

I only tried it once with the steel disk, but do not remember the hub length(I have both).

Tomorrow I will take a gander if no one has already provided your pix request.

My 510 is not 'operational' so it will be a Mark 5 setup.

Here are a few shots of the aluminum disc and a short hub for the steel sanding disc (leftover from a conversion to 520).

First the aluminum disc, outboard view......it is positioned up against the lower guard.

As noted in post #4 of this thread, the shorter hubs and saw arbors will not work with the new 505/510/520/7 saw guard systems.

No surprises me thinks. DC 'guard' was a blade guard in a previous 'life'.

First the 'normal' long arbor.

I think we can come to the conclusion that the guard is the reason for the longer arbors, and that the positioning sleeve on the way tubes was sized to accommodate both the longer arbors and the headstock/carriage spacing and the new blade slot location relative to them both.

With no 'guard' for dust collection, any of them will work off the left side of the table.

Using the saw blade off the side of the table is definitely NOT recommended!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:;)

P.S. Rob posted as I was creating this and I did not notice until I posted this. Anyway more is gooder!:rolleyes: And I did promise . . . .

Thanks everyone for the explanations, especially the pictures!!

I knew about the new table size, but had forgotten about it...Now I understand how it affects other parts of the SS.

I sure hope this thread (which I somehow missed) resulted in a clear understanding for everyone. It confused me but that does not matter because I do not have any short hubs.

Relying only on the many terrific photos that were posted, I conclude that use of the short hub should be limited to the 500. Stated differently, the short hub should not be used with a 505/510/520.

The short hubs cannot be used with the dc guard.

They can be used with any model SS same as before the dc guard was made available.

Problem is, all that dust!!!:eek:

Ability to use the rive knife requires the correct arbor.
