I round mine with the disk sander. However, I have a template for the insert that I use to guide a router. It would be no problem to make another template and groove it for the insert and rout it round. Mine's a slip fit, so a couple small pieces of double sided tap would hold it for routing.

You might be able to get away with NOT rounding the one end but it is so simple to do.

When I make ZCI, I usually do the blanks (if not the complete ZCI) in quantity. To safe some time and, more importantly, to achieve some duplicity, I made a sanding jig. I use it on the belt sander but it could be done just as well on the disk sander.

The one hole (small) is the pivot point and the larger hole superfluous.
