need fine quill adjustment

I have made a router table that fits on the table when in the under-the-table routing setup.

I use the stop collar to made fine adjustments to the fence position, but do not have a good method of making fine adjustment to the quill for vertical movement.

Has anyone worked (and solved) this problem?

Place the blade of a feeler gauge between the rubber bumper on the quill and the headstock.

This can be done but it is really easy to remove the rubber bumper and it would be a lot better to measure metal to metal.

I have complained about this issue before, this is one of the reasons a shopsmith is not a good router table.

I've shown several solutions to fix other issues and may or may not have shown this before. I did a pretty big post about stop collars and I really can't remember if this was included, I've also posted about router usage so it could also or instead be in those posts.

I have a split collar which makes it easy to take on or off. You can always pull the quill and use a standard stop collar but for the few bucks you save I've gone this route.

I extend the quill and lock it in place. The stop collar is then attached, making sure it is tight enough to not move yet no so tight that it damages anything.

Now when you loosen the quill it will stay at that point where the stop is. I use that as the starting point for adjustments. I use the quill to move close to the height trying to stay just a little short. Then adjust the collar when I am with in feeler gauge range. With the collar locked I can then move the quill up by the thickness of feeler gauge I need. Move the collar up again to lock it in place along with the quill lock.

The lock can be used for other quill features so feel free to play with other projects and settings.

Is this a perfect solution? No not even close. Well unless you love working under the table a lot. Works better from above but then that too is not a perfect routing solution.

Best advice is to get a couple of router tables that allow the router to change its own height via the built in adjustments they have, or buy a lift that will get you there too.

Sorry not a fan of the shopsmith as a router. OPR on the other hand I will have a thumbs up to.

Also, you could just rough in the height with the quill and then adjust the table height with the Shopsmith micro adjustable stop collar.

Edit: Oops, I see you are already using it to adjust the fence. Better buy another one. I think they are on sale.

When in the typical vertical drill press/above or below router/etc modes the table will move in and out via the adjuster but not up and down. Remember the table is rotated.........

Thanks for the suggestion , kablerj, but I have one of those and it still doesn't give fine adjustment of the quill. Yes, should I ever get it right on, but the relatively gross quill feed makes it difficult.
