Cut an X into the drive end of the stock. For the spurs to fit into it.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Along with the X, I drill a small hole in the center of the X for the point of the drive. Then, hammer the spur drive onto the end of the wood with a rubber or wood mallet so the spurs get a good bite into the X you cut. THEN install it on the headstock.

addition to the other two; when driving the spur drive into the wood use a wooden mallet. If you must use a steel hammer put a block of hardwood over the spur drive to avoid damaging it
