Keyless drill chuck vs. Original Jacobs?

Post by ryanbp01 »

How does the keyless chuck compare with the Jacobs chuck which came with the 520? Is it worth the price?

Here's one thread that discusses the Keyless Chuck.

NO, not worth it in my opinion. I find no slippage problems with the later Shopsmith drill chucks.

All my hand held drills have keyless chucks and I find them quite convenient. But, as part of the setup process for the Shopsmith DP, I don't find the Jacobs chuck and key that inconvenient, at all.
I've never experienced drill bit slippage. Maybe a bit OCD but, I always tighten at all three holes. My larger bits have flats on the shank which helps, too.

Like Gene, most of my drill motors have keyless chucks and I like them. However, I see no value in having one on the drill press.

Besides, it appears to be very large.

check out the SS mortiser before you buy keyless

I have a Grizzly keyless chuck on my Delta 12 inch drill press.

I borrowed a Delta Mortising kit for my model from a friend but found that the Grizzly keyless chuck would not allow enough 'headroom' for the Delta bits.

I did not remove it and re-install the Delta keyed chuck to see if the keyless chuck was really the issue, but if I owned the SS Mortising Kit I would want to be sure it would work with the SS keyless chuck.

I imaging SS did that check, but I would ask before buying.

I bought one on Ebay that had been fabricated for $34. It was sold by Sh0psm1thjack

However I only use it in the tail stock for boring pen blanks. The setscrew protrudes a bit and I never did check the angle to see if it matches the quill. Until I do bother to check it (if I ever do), it is very convenient and I feel no worries about it working loose since it is not turning.

Doubtful that I would be willing to pay what SS wants for theirs, but thsi was a decent bargain.

Be well,
Ben

I have a electric drill that has a key less chuck, and every time I use it I burn my hand. I sure would not like one on the shopsmith. The price is enough to not want it. My battery operated drills have key less chuck, but don't burn my hand.
