Could that be a 3/4" wood dowel instead of drill rod?

I really like your idea of using the carriage as a foundation. Since we are talking taking measurements for run out, wobble and such for consideration, I use a different approach. I take advantage of the miter slot and Shopsmith sliding "Tee nut". I use a steel plate as a foundation for my "On and Off" magnetic base for my dial indicator. I had a spare piece of 3/8" drill rod to expand the length of reach if necessary. Care needs to be taken to lock down the headstock and table before taking any measurements.

I personally reject all quills with more than +-.001" play. I send a few dozen rejected quill shafts to the salvage yard recently along with more 2000 pds of rusty and corroded Shopsmith parts (2 pickup truck loads). I cleared about 25% of my storage shed.
That was quite a haul!
