I've had a Nova chuck since the mid 90s and used it on Shopsmiths and a lathe with a screw thread arbor since then without a problem. My adapter is the original "F" with the small set screw. It hasn't been a problem in the least. But as I mentioned in one of these earlier posts, you can tighten the set screw onto the round portion of the Shopsmith spindle if you're not careful.

Now the tapered chuck is all well and dandy, but that is a secondary(backup) feature.

Add to that the 'inadequate' support due to the short adapter.

Tis impossible to get too specific here since there are different adapter designs from different sources.

I think part of the 'problem' is the metric set screws. My guess is that they were not getting tight enough when using 'fractional inch' wrenches.

Chucks being loose constitutes a risk.

I'm not savvy enough to know the answer so I must ask the question.

If the sockets on the Nova screws are metric does that mean that the threads on those same screws are also metric? Reason for this question: Can I purchase screws with the proper threads that will accept imperial sized sockets?

I am not a heavy user of the Nova Chuck so it has not thoroughly tested (by me) but I did find that the screws holding the jaws were not all tight and that they are in fact 4mm sockets. I have been using a 5/32" socket wrench.

I only have the pix in the first post here to answer that. Those pix indicate the answer is no.

However, the hole could be drilled out and tapped if there is enough meat there(looks doubtful).:(
