Ugly Jig - holder for sharpening stones

Post by bobgroh »

Every now and then I need a simple jig for something and sometimes that jig turns out to be pretty ugly!! If there was a contest, this would be my entry!

I have some sharpening stones (water type) and have tried a number of ways to hold them while using them - with most of my attempts being unsuccessful. With my push to use hand tools more often, I really, really need to keep my planes/chisels/whatever sharp(er) and, in a burst of frustration, I grabbed some crud wood and threw together a frame to hold my two stones in a vise and keep them from moving around. This is the result (painted with with some left over interior latex paint):

I took a piece of some sort of composite board, cut some pieces of trim board to size and build a 'wall' around the stones to hold them and then just glued the wood down (Titebond - no nails, no screws - just the holding power of the glue). Here is a picture with the trim pieces glued in place:

The board has a short 'fin' on the back which is dropped into the vise to hold everything in place - this shows the final part without the stones and shows the back side.

Ugly!! But effective. I may build another one sometime but this gets me back to 'funner' projects.

Or, my version.

If it's ugly and works, it ain't ugly!

(Sorry, JPG.)

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

I have some that I have made that would not want anyone to see, but they worked for what I needed at the time.
