Jointer Blades

For you Tucson (and environs) dwellers: I noticed some nicks in my jointer blades, which are leaving small ridges in my work. Is there any place in town that will sharpen them, or alternatively, is there any place in town to buy new blades that will fit?

Assuming that you have a Shopsmith jointer, you can sharpen them your self if you get one of these. However, you also need a conical disk.

Thanks Dusty. So far I'm up to $150 plus shipping for the sharpening jig, conical disc, and conical paper. I was hoping for a less expensive solution.

I called one place for replacement blades, and he suggested that I try moving one blade to one side or the other to cover the gap.While cutting the surface with all 3 blades is ideal, one blade covering a small nick would be satisfactory.

Check out a jig that is made by a company called Deulen. I made my own version of it using a piece of maple ages ago and it works great and cost about $5.00 which was the price of the threaded brass inserts to hoed the knives in place. It only takes a few minutes to make with the SS table saw and is also very quick to use with no setup of any tools.

Bob, I respect your opinion, and had the same thought, but..the internet and YouTube are full of articles and videos about sharpening jointer and planer blades.Are they all wrong?

Does anybody know the size of the ShopSmith jointer blades? I called a couple of blade places and they keep on asking me the same annoying question: "What size are the blades?' I've never had them out or had occasion to measure them. Why not buy ShopSmith blades? you ask. At $50 they are 2X the price of other HSS blades available, and just about as costly as carbide tipped blades.

One further question--"Are the SS blades so unique in any way as to be irreplaceable with after market blades?"

They are tapered which can cause problems for 'sharpeners'.

I Made a holder from a piece of oak an some walnut scraps.

If I can find the thread(a test of current search function), I will post a link.

Your sketch attachment didn't come thru. Any idea of the thickness?
The point may be moot since JPG says the blades are unique.
