That looks like the original protective plastic sheet still in place on the planer table.

Any ideas on how to remove the plastic coating on the table? It is cracked and not easily peeled off... Looks like the previous owners just left in on.
I thought of using a heat gun, but would that damage the table?
The Sawdust sessions on the planer have been helpful in cleaning it up.

Goo Gone? Lacquer thinner? Mineral Spirits? Alcohol?

Finally got the planer cleaned up... I had to use mineral spirits, a razor blade scraper, and a green scrub pad to remove the protective coating on the table. There were cobwebs under the table and on the chain... It was sitting for some time. There's still some rust to clean up on the tie bars.

I would have some serious misgivings about the 'foam' idea. I know that some of the foam products (maybe all) stick like the very devil to everything. If you changed your mind, it would be a real chore to get the stuff removed. It is a neat idea but sort of irreversible. The same problem exists in the bandsaw where the sawdust tends to accumulate in all the little nooks and crannies - I don't find it all that much of a problem to get in there every now and then to clean it out.
