Does anyone know where I can find a set screw mount drill chuck for the SS spindle that can take a shanks up to 5/8" ?

NOPE!

However adapters can be used to get there.

5/8" bore is unfortunately not common.

Shopsmith introduced a new keyless drill chuck that fits that bill.

Part number 556273 selling for $130.21

Thanks for the info, but $130 (plus shipping) is a bit pricey, and is overkill for my project. I need to find a reasonable alternative.

Perhaps if we knew what you needed it for we might be able to advise better. There might be other ways of doing a project that would not require a larger chuck?

Pretty resourceful group here, we might surprise you with we as a group can come up with.

For starters we need to know what the drill chuck is.

Some have a tapered bore, and others are threaded.

And the purpose is? ;)

i.e. what do you need to 'chuck' that is 5/8"? If it is a 5/8" shaft, a 5/8" coupler would suffice.

You might check out routing bits. I think Whiteside makes a ¼ inch shank bit that has a ⅝ cutting diameter. Might be something you could use.

I realize that this is a resourceful group--that's why I posed the question here.

So, I want to buy a 1 1/2" plug cutter ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017Q ... 0LWTFI0BL8 ) which has a 5/8" shank.

Right now the only option I'm seeing is to flatten the shank and get a
5/"8-to-5/8" set screw coupler.

I would welcome any other ideas.
