SS 510 Table Extention

A couple of days ago I was ripping piece of expensive Claro Walnut to make another forearm for a Stevens 414 rifle when I made a mistake. I usually get the trusty support with rollers down to support the piece coming off the table. I got in a hurry and ripped it holding it down and sure enough, it popped up at the end of the cut and caught the saw blade. Good by "Claro".

I thought others have run into the same problem with arms that are not long enough!!

I made an extension using a couple pieces of aluminum angle iron and 1/4"
hard board. The table already had holes so I threaded the angle iron to accept 3/8" cap screws so it would not be necessary to put nuts on the inside. To remove the extension, simply back off the 3/8" cap screws. The hardboard holds everything together. For support for now I will use the telescoping legs. I want to use supports to the table carriage but the length would change with any change in table height. Gotta think about it some more.

I am like Dusty, I don't trust the telescoping legs.

Don, it looks as though you have solved a problem that I believe all Shopsmith users have, even those that have not recognized it yet. We need an outfeed table.

On yours, I suggest you set about ten pounds of weight out on the output edge of the table to check holding power of the telescopic leg.

I it is my intent to make a couple of supports with slots that can be "Locked" down with knob like on a "Tee" slot on a router table.

You are getting ready to embark on a long trip. I planned with my outfeed table for about three years. I finally settled with what I have now but I still have some changes that I might (one day) incorporate.

Check this thread for some ideas. This is not my current OFT. I could not find a link to the latest.

I had no idea someone had gone to the lengths you have to solve a short arm problem. I thought I had done something. Mine is much simpler and light duty. I know I could lower the aluminum angles and use 3/4 Melamine or such but I wanted to keep it as light as possible but still have stability.

I really wanted to stay away from the telescoping legs though. I found an old thread that showed someone taking one apart and somehow getting to work. I tried the same procedure and the little plastic ring that is off set broke in two. Now I have some good aluminum tubing to solve another problem with someday. And I do have one leg that still works.
