I finally got around to replacing my original jointer that that made a one way trip to Nashville, Tennessee in the trunk of my uncle's car around 1965 and never made it's way home. I got it with my SS and never took it out of the box. Any way enough sad story. I bought a 2000 jointer and received it in 3 pieces. I did receive an owner's manual and proceeded to assemble it according to the manual and things went well, Except.

After assembly was complete, I noticed the input table seemed a little loose. I found there is a 9/16" bolt and nut under the table that apparently mounts the table. I tightened the nut but found when you do, the cutter knives catch on the table at "0" cut. My first thought was to adjust "0" so the table is a little lower but am not sure if this is right. If you loosen the nut a little, it frees the cutter head. I didn't get a schematic, so am not sure exactly how the in-feed table mates to the base. Can someone enlighten me on what the problem may be. I am reluctant to operate the unit with that nut somewhat loose!

If everything was assembled correctly the infeed table should NOT be loose. Additionally, I don't know what bolt or nut you are loosening that would cause the cutter head to loosen. The only way to loosen the cutterhead that I know of is to loosen the bearing carrier screws that you would remove to take the cutter head out. Check the parts list on the SS home site for a pictorial of how the jointer is assembled. The washers and springs have to be assembled in the correct order for the system to work correctly. From your post I am assuming that you bought a used 2000 jointer. In that case it is possible that the infeed and outfeed tables could be a mix and match set. The tables are machined as an assembly and are not generally interchangeable.

The stud passes through the slot, then the washer/springs and finally the nut. The washers/springs and nut are all below the outfeed table, NOT between the two tables(the exploded pix is misleading re the sequence).

Yes this is the bolt I was referring to. When I got the jointer and it was set on the SS due to my hips problem, I couldn't get down on the floor and was going by feel. The nut was finger loose. I just assumed it should be tight so I tightened it obviously too much. I lifted the jointer off the rest and turned it over to find the stud is spring loaded, so I backed it off so it is snug but not loose. This seems to solve the table being loose problem. My biggest concern now is as you raise the in-feed table towards "0", it can be raised past "0" to the point the cutter blades can contact the in-feed table. It seems there should be a stop such that this can't happen. Will do some more investigation to see if a stop is there somewhere.

OK I don't know where my post went so here I go again.
I just checked my jointer and there is NO mechanical stop to prevent you from going past zero. The mechanical stop prevents you from taking too deep of a cut without disabling the stop. Typical is 1/8".
Because the infeed table is moving on a ramp this causes movement in an up and down as well a left to right motion.
The left to right movement is what causes the cutterhead throat opening to close up. You may consider grinding the infeed table to eliminate the interference but I would be extremely hesitant to do that. Just don't go past the zero point.
The stud #4, in JPG's post, with the washers and nylock nut should be tightened just enough to prevent the infeed table from moving when the jointer is in use. If the table moves while in use the depth of cut will change and cause problems and possibly a dangerous condition.

The purpose of the washer/spring stack is to tension the sliding surfaces. Consider them a gravity assist or bump up stop! ;)

As for inadvertent movement, the infeed table is captive in the adjusting 'knob' groove. As long as 'final' depth of cut adjustment is made while raising the infeed table, it should not move.(eliminates backlash)

It sounds like something is quite off. Perhaps your knives are too far to the outside? That is where mine come closest to hitting, and not that close then, certainly not at zero.

From the top I see this much clearance when the infeed table is adjusted all the way past zero until it reaches the end and the adjustment bottoms out. There is still a fair amount of space and the table is above the outfeed (not very useful):

I tried to configure my jointer so they would hit and found nothing to change. When I loaded the photos just now I saw that that may be why. Check where they are side to side. Note that my knives are new, so they aren't just worn down and shorter. Hmmm - make sure you do have actual shopsmith knives. If you don't they may not just be taller but they won't safely work, as shopsmith knives are thicker away from the edge (as you probably know, but just to be sure). Anyhow, hope this helps. My jointer needed a cleaning anyhow since I used it without the dust collector yesterday. Sure fills up fast!
