Scroll Saw drive

My scroll saw is not a stand alone. I have a motor and control off a Ryobi 16in variable speed and was thinking of adapting it to a mount that would drive the saw instead of the Mark V. Think it will work?

I'm sure I can make it fit. That should be easy. I'm curious about the power.

I have the stand alone (teal). It has a 1/8 HP variable speed motor so I would presume if the Ryobi was of at least the same HP it would produce enough oomph to work. Is there some indication on the Ryobi or manual which tells you the HP?

OK, this is how it turned out. as a temp set up, I made a wood drive hub...

It cut a 1 1/4 thick piece of hard maple no problem.

BUT, the gear ratios in the saw cut the strokes way down. The motor runs 400 - 1600 when hooked up as a direct drive but the saw was cutting at about 2 strokes a second on 400 and around 8-9 strokes a second on 1600. Lots of power. I'm going to see if I can set up a 4 to 1 pulley or gear drive and make it work. I like how square this saw cuts without a lot of adjusting compared to my Dewalt but running it off the Mark V power head is way too noisy.

I was tickled when seeing your wood drive hub! Wouldn't have thought of that myself.

BTW it doesn't seem your speed (the movement of the blade) is too low. If it works this way why not stay with it, at least for a while. I haven't slowed my PowerPro down to 250 or 400 RPM to see the effect on blade movement, but will do so later.

Just checked the recommended speed (on the PP) for hardwood and a skip tooth blade. It is 2080 RPM. This seems pretty close to the 1600 your system has at the moment.

Charlese, I was thinking the same thing after posting last night. That block cut much better just above the lower setting than at high and the #5 blade I used didn't get hot, which is always good. I'll finish it off and play with it while I get some gears made up.
