Drill press / 10er vs 510/520/M7 you're thoughts

I've been following / reading with great interest all of the restorations of the model 10's and can see the use of one in the shop as a drill press.

I've got a M7 and a second 510, and am wondering if it makes more sense to pick up a 3rd for a stand alone press. My thinking is all of my attachments / fences / accessories would fit on it whereas if I went the 10e route I'd need to start getting those accessories to fit that unit.

So my question for discussion is it worth getting the 10e and associated accessories vs another 510/520? Any advantages or disadvantages of one over the other?

Other than a table insert, a rip fence, and a miter gauge, what other 'attachments' do you need that are model 10 specific?

I vote for a "10" as a dedicated drill press.

OK, I have a 520 Power Pro that has been upgraded to that from a 510 that I bought new in 1994. I bought a full up Power pro headstock and double tilt and used the other MK V headstock to build a dedicated drill press. I also have a dedicated 10ER drill press along with a MK V shorty that I built. All the MK V's have 520 tables and fences. I did that for interchangeability.

All of the accessories accept for the mortising attachment will fit the 10ER. OK, that is not quite true since the 10ER fence dose not have T tracks. However the main advantage of the SS drill press is still available in the 10ER. A large table. a tilting table and an adjustable fence.

The MK V slow speed is a little too fast for larger Forstner bits. The 10ER with the speed changer it much better.

I have only a 510 and have used it often as a drill press and a horizontal borer. Using a 10 position quill feed handle and a flip up fence stop when needed really increased my ease and/or accuracy of drilling. These and other accessories are available for a MarkV - I don't think they fit a 10er.

Also, with a PowerPro there is no restriction on speed from 250RPM to 10,000. With a speed reducer the low speed can go down to 35.7RPM.

Hi Steve.

I have absolutely no comment about the situation and if you believe that....

If I could have a dedicated drill press and money was no object I would buy the PowerPro cousin being released by Tekna. It has the DVR motor, just like the PP and if it is anything like their lathes, it will have a remote control wrist watch!! With your penchant for modifications I would bet you could adapt a 520 table to the Tekna drill press. Best of all worlds.

I became enamored with the PP for drilling when I was misusing a spade bit on a piece of pine. The PP stopped momentarily (like when I have a catch using the lathe ) to keep me from damaging the bit or maybe the wood or just possibly the motor itself. The smart part of that system is something that I think trumps anything the 500 and dial adjusted offspring could offer.

If you have the room and an adjustable speed controller for an ER, not worried about the "so much smarter than the operator" computer system, plus want the STABILITY, then I think the ER would be a reasonable choice. If you are not intimidated by HAL, then I think the PP with its brain is a better direction.

But then again I have no opinion what so ever about this particular thread!
