What am I missing

Happy Friday all!!!

Ok, here comes the dumb question of the week!!! As I am reassembling my 10ER headstock, I realized that when I put the depth stop collar back on, I can see right up the spindle (where you attach the saw blade, drill chuck, etc) to the bearing. I just put new bearings in this puppy, so what did I lose in the process of reassembly? Should I be able to see the bearing? All comments and help is greatly appreciated.

There are no dumb questions, and it is good that you could see that it did not look right.
There is an aluminum collar that goes on the shaft and holds the inner race of the bearing in place on the shaft.

Also, advance the quill a bit and lock it in place before mounting the depth stop collar on the quill.
This makes it easier to get the collar on properly so that the set screws register in the groove on the quill.
The inner side of the depth stop collar holds the outer bearing race against the quill and this minimizes end play.

I appreciate the reply but My quill is different from the one that is pictured. I do not have a groove at the end of it.

I noticed it when I took the quill apart that the quill did not have a groove for the screws of the depth stop collar to ride in like I have seen numerous pictures with the quill shaft.

It looks like that but mine does not have it. I know what that other locking collar was for but I couldn't figure out where to put it dumb me for not taking the pictures maybe I put the quill in backwards.

Maybe I missed something but I took enough pictures that I thought it looked right maybe I will disassemble and recheck tomorrow thank you again so much for the reply

Align/tighten the top on the flat first, then tighten the side set screw.

Notice the stop collar is there.

The quill stop bracket must clear the stop collar.

Sorry, I had forgotten there were slightly different quills but the one on my 10er dedicated drill press is like the JPG posted (no groove).
That is not a big deal though.
If you can see the bearing from the end then the small retaining collar is not in place.
And do extend the quill a bit when seating the collar attached to the stop rod, if it doesn’t seat properly you will get a lot of end play.
Don't ask how I know.
