The next project begins

Post by masonsailor2 »

So the next project begins. It will involve making 10 or 15 cubes ( 10 will be made first with an option of five more) which will be 16”X 16” square and 12” deep. They will be ¾ inch thick alder panels with ¾ X ¾ inch pieces of Honduran mahogany in each corner at the end of the panels. These cubes will be stacked upon a base approx. 6 inches high to allow for leveling. The unit will be a display case that will be next to the stairs and step down to follow the stairs in a 4-3-2-1 configuration. Now for the fun part. Each cube will have a mahogany light valence at the front of the cube on all four sides to hide the led lighting strips which will have a recessed groove to accept and hide the light strip at a 45 degree angle. Each cube will require four separate dimmable controls to allow for light adjustment of each side of every cube individually. There can be no exposed wiring whatsoever. My plan is to build in a drawer in the base unit which will house all the dimmers. I will begin a sample cube this week and post pictures.

I did not know that Austin Hardwoods were still in business. We had one here in Tampa but it closed down. I loved to buy wood there. Little pricey but they made sure you got the best wood.

Good day in the shop today. I got the cube prototype finished and approved by the boss. Now to build the other nine. I included pictures of the light valence which shows only the one in place. Ultimately there will be one on each side of the cube and mitered together. The body is alder with the corners and valence in Honduran mahogany.

Should look very impressive when all the lights are on. The corner joinery is..? epoxy glued butt joints? dowels or biscuits?
