10ER Question

Considering on contacting the owner of this 10 ER.

First off he says it is 220 volt. I would guess this is not the correct motor?

Second, he states that it has "rare speed changer". I do not see one in the pic? Yes it could not be pictured. Supposed to be a 48 model.

Besides the rust on the tables, what do you guys think? It is under $200.00.

Are there any made of unobtainium parts missing?

I'm no expert but that looks like a speed changer sitting on the tubes between the headstock and where the power cord is wrapped around the headrest. Obviously it isn't installed in the proper position.

As for the motor, it doesn't sound correct but I'll let the 10ER experts chime in

It could well be 220 volt. The motor did not come with the 10 E/ER s, Wards did sell a motor separately that was made to go with it
Because the motor mounts outside the machine it is very flexible as to what will work.
The motor pictured has a TEFC case (Totally Enclosed, Fan-Cooled) which is nice.

The speed changer is mounted on the tubes close to the left end, and it has the earlier design head rest so 48 would be about right.

For under $200 it looks like a deal to me.
I am seeing minimal rust.
All the stock parts seem to be there
I see a drill chuck, rip fence, mitre gauge, lathe tool rest, disk sander and a mitre slot extension .
There is a second table mounted where small extension table would normally go.
I don't see any lathe centers but you can borrow those from your mk V if you need them.
If the speed changer needs new bushings or belts you can get them here Hog Winslow

I totally agree with Ron. If you get it for under $200 it is a very good deal. Speed changers alone average around $150 on eBay.

As for unobtainium, e-bay is currently a great source(likely the only one for individual parts).

The 10E had a crude extension table, so that owner created what appears to be an excellent alternative.

Most 10ER stuff(which itself varies) will work on the 10E.

Unusual base(not bad, just not typical).

With the speed changer it is worth $200 fer sure. Make sure the speed changer castings are not cracked/repaired.

P.S. The rip fence appears to be a 10E with upgrade that adds the rear clamp and mortise hold down shaft.

well a deal has been struck! It is aways away, so I have to arrange pickup but he is willing to hang on to it and work has me going in that area in a month or so.

His ad said 10E, not 10ER, I thought it was a error. What is the difference between a 10E and a 10ER? Other than the stated extension table.

The two biggest things other than the extension table are the main table tilt quadrant and the fence. The tilt stops on the quadrant are different between the 10E and ER. The 10ER fence locks at both the front and the back of the table. The original 10E fence only locks at the front. There was an upgrade to the 10E fence to add a rear lock. That is what JPG was talking about. It is really hard to tell from the picture but it doesn't look like it has it to me. If not you can just buy a 10ER fence on eBay with the back lock. They are on there all the time. The mod for the 10E fence to add the back lock just bolted onto the existing fence. In my experience it is a very rare piece. Having said that, there is one on eBay right now. Item #291504816421 and the seller wants $125. It has been a long time since I have seen one on eBay. By comparison 10ER fences are in the $25+- range.

The other big thing is the tail stock that holds the extension table. The 10E and 10ER extension tables attach to the tail stock in completely different ways and are not interchangeable. FWIW, it looks like you have a 10ER tail stock so you can just go on eBay and get 10ER extension table. That is the preferred one anyhow.

Well I picked it up today. While I have been the proud owner for a bit, I now have it in my possession.

I didn't see anything real ugly that caught my eye. I did see that one of the tables have been "modified" to fit. I'll get it cleaned up in the next week or so and get some more complete pics for you guys to tell this newbie what I have (or don't have!)

By the way, what are these things made from? Lead? Kryptonite? Plain ole steel cannot be that heavy!

I guess when I bought it, as a short term thought I had kind of planned on mounting it on the wall like I have seen as a drill press temporarily as my cheap craftsman one took a dump. But after lifting this, I don't know about that. The real long term reason for buying this is if I ever get a burr up my rear to try wood turning I could set this unit aside for that.
