Ed, you are absolutely right. I cannot buy or build (even from salvaged parts) a computer with 4k resolution using an i5 cpu. These devices are new on the market and those folks who demand that high level technology are going to keep the prices up for a while. Wait. Generation 6 cpus will be on the market soon and so will "better" monitors.

In the meantime my i4 cpu and the pair of HP2011 monitors I have will serve me well. I am slowing down so there is no need for me to be speeding up my computer. I seldom (if ever) wait for it anyhow. I do need larger monitors but the budget does allow.

Yes, you are correct. I priced an ASUS case at Computer Renaissance this past week end. $1245 for a case (no power supply). Just a metal box with holes drilled in all the right places and a bunch of fans. Almost enough money to do a Shopsmith upgrade. There will be no ASUS computers in this house unless someone gives it to me. Even then. If I had that, I would have to rewire to get rid of all the blinking and strobing lights.

Again I agree most of what I mentioned is not needed by most people. But the point I was making was that Apple computers are not over priced when you consider their specs. You can not spec out a similar PC for less.

Whether you buy an Apple or a spec'ed out PC is up to the person buying the machine.

I'm leaning toward Apple for one reason you don't have to mess with a dozen manufactures to get your drivers up to spec. Plus it runs UNIX which is harder to hack.

I must agree that this is a strong point (a MAJOR weak point for Microsoft).

Here's a link from Microsoft explaining the Windows 10 update:

A bunch of problems chasing drivers was what finally tipped me over to Linux years ago. That and Vista...  I was buying a lot of stuff at yard sales cheap but then couldn't track down suitable drivers to make it work. With Linux (I'm running current distribution of Ubuntu 14.04) I don't know drivers exist. Just plug in something and it sorts it out... It hasn't failed me yet.
I refuse to pay the price of a Shopsmith for a computer. I would rather buy something for the shop, another old tractor or rescue another horse. I also refuse to pay out for big bucks for software when I can get as good or better for free.
Consider also that the Linux "walk away from both of the big two" option available to everyone is the only reason that the "Big Two" are not charging you 3 times as much as they do now for software.
At one time I was running Windows and Linux in a "dual boot" setup but then with Win 8 Microsoft decided to complicate that. Easy fix... TTTHHHHBBBBBTTT!!! Microsoft :p :p :p :p Reformat HD and do clean Linux install... I wasn't using Windows anyway. I was just going to putter with it for fun. I'll go putter in the shop instead. :D
Of course Linux isn't for everybody. Like about everything else there is a learning curve. A lot of that was just different terms for the same thing. There are also those that have need for some "special" software that does not have a Linux version but that is becoming pretty rare since Linux is becoming more mainstream and tons and tons of new software is becoming available.
Perhaps the biggest drag on Linux as a mainstream operating system is that segment of Linux users and developers that just don't want "everybody" to be using it. Some want it to stay a command-line, manual operation, private club sort of thing. They are losing. :)
