I do all of my table saw work with the speed control set just above 'O' UNLESS the Mark V tells me otherwise. Listen to your saw. If it is laboring at the speed it is set at, you should hear it.Cornell wrote:Is "Q" fast enough to cut pine? And will it hurt the SS to start and stop it at "Q"?
Perhaps more information than you need... my current projects are cleaning/rebuilding my SPTs (bandsaw, jointer and planer); and building drawers for my workbench and a rolling unit upon which to place the SPTs (1/2 inch pine plywood, 2*4 and 1*6 pine and masonite for the drawer bottoms). Technically, I could do them all with just the table saw. I can turn on the SS at "Q" without blowing the circuit breaker.

Why the 'extra' step(turning down to slow stop). Actually there is no 'stop' at slow. The adjustment is limited by the control sheave fully closing the pulley. There is an actual adjustable high speed stop. When it is adjusted, the ring is set to fast.Cornell wrote:Thanks JPG.
Perhaps I wasn't clear.
-Put the pork chop in at "fast".
-Put the chuck on and turn it down towards the "slow" position until it stops.
-Then put the dial on indicating "slow".
I had a thought about the graphite... what about spraying it onto a paper towel and wiping it on that way?
Not sure how a paper towel will help the graphite getting into the tear teeth.

First, easier to start and stop and slow, and second, I'm ignorant ;-)JPG wrote: Why the 'extra' step(turning down to slow stop). Actually there is no 'stop' at slow. I thought that if I turned it down far enough to slow, it would stop. Would fast be better? And how does one adjust the fast speed stop?
As I'd indicated, when I spray the graphite, I don't get a fine powder spray, I get a few small chunks. And I was thinking of the broad (relatively speaking) surfaces. A "spray" would leave a few chunks. Smearing it about with paper towel might leave it... smeared all over.JPG wrote: Not sure how a paper towel will help the graphite getting into the tear teeth.
And, as always, thank you. I very much appreciate your expertise.

Ah, cool... so use "N", unless it's laboring... good to know, thank youdusty wrote: I do all of my table saw work with the speed control set just above 'N' UNLESS the Mark V tells me otherwise. Listen to your saw. If it is laboring at the speed it is set at, you should hear it.

Re: What did I buy, 500 or 510?
I found a forum note at http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 1321#p1321. In it, Nick discusses screwing the ... post around which the idler gear in the speed control rotates... in until it pushes against the control arm (when at "fast")
Is this what JPG was talking about when he said "There is an actual adjustable high speed stop. When it is adjusted, the ring is set to fast"?
(Wow... "Nick" is Nick Engler, Director, Shopsmith National Woodworking Academy... guessing he knows his stuff ;-) )
Following the same thread, I found http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/prod ... e_1_10.pdf
Seems like a good thread, read it all.

You should use a chart to decide what speeds are needed for the various functions and then go from that. The speed chart has general sawing at "R", heavy ripping at "O", trim cuts at "S", and the book points out that "A good rule of thumb is: The deeper the cut or the harder the wood, the slower you should run the saw. But if the blade turns too slowly (below "O" or 2800 RPM),you many get a rough, splintery cut." So yes there is a thing as too slow so far as quality of cut goes.

I stand corrected. "N" is too slow. My table saw is set at "O" just as Reible has stated.Cornell wrote:Ah, cool... so use "O", unless it's laboring... good to know, thank youdusty wrote: I do all of my table saw work with the speed control set just above 'O' UNLESS the Mark V tells me otherwise. Sorry to have misled you, Cornell. I know better than to go on my memory these days. I should always "go look".

I never stand corrected, too tiring, I always sit ;-)dusty wrote: I stand corrected. "N" is too slow.

I "stand corrected" more and more every day.
I avoid that or at least try to by keeping most of my opinions to myself.

But if not 'exposed' they cannot be 'corrected'.dusty wrote:I "stand corrected" more and more every day.

That is why I 'expose' mine!
I learn more that way.
There is no dishonor in misunderstanding.
Add reinstall knob to the procedure.
