Loose Tailstock at Way Tubes

Noticed the tailstock had movement at the way tubes. Made sure everything was level and took 2 pictures; one with the tailstock forward position and seconded with the tailstock backward position. It appears to show that the movement is approximately 1/32-2/32. The pin through the casting does not move.

Is this common and I am just noticing it and/or is there a corrective remedy?

Pleased it is not uncommon. The movement is at part #20 & #24. Next time turning I will make sure the tailstock is in the back position (when pressure is applied) and use the Eccentric Mount for the needed adjustment.

The play I was referring to is between the spt posts and 24.

20/24 play is a different animal.

Off hand the only thing I can think of is the way ubes are not secure in the "24" bores.

Agree the top way tubes are not secured. The bottom way tubes have #3 & #4 to assure they are secured. For those who have removed the top way tubes how did they fit when reassembling? Are the tubes compression fit?

If you have a Dec 1993, or later machine, the way tubes are held by setscrews on top of the base arm, part 27 in the diagram. If you have an earlier machine, put it in vertical position and look through the pivot arm casting to see and reach the setscrews. (I'm getting this info from the double tilt base upgrade directions.)

Thanks Mike, that would have been the very last place I would have looked for a possible solution. It easy to find and just as easy to tighten!! Thanks again,

Easy for you young guys to do!!

Its that extra effort and Yankee ingenuity which allows me to get things done. One half of my garage is the home of the SS. My mobility scooter has a jig crane style lift to put it into the vehicle. It takes patience and care to use it when needed such as removing/placing the band saw and 4" jointer. Had the SS since July and will take some time in getting things setup properly. But for now it gets the job done.
