What would cause this

I will post the how later, but I tweaked a test run and here are the results.

I adjusted the base to achieve the desired effects described above.

First I tweaked/verified the rip fence to main table miter gauge slot.

Then leaving the main table in place, the fence was moved to the ext table mounted on the right.

Then the ext table was moved to the left. The fence was removed and re installed on the table.

Not perfect, but pretty close(close enough I think!).

And no my 60+ year old main table is not perfectly flat anyway!

Yep all this done with a 1962 Goldie.

Base adjustments were:

Make sure left spt mount aligned with the headstock main shaft the same as on the right. Way tubes NOT twisted. Involved that humongous set screw.

Make sure the spt mounts were parallel to each other.
left tube to right tube same front and rear.

I did not check way tubes to bench tubes being parallel, but I think we can assume they are.

No attempt was made to verify floor flatness.

EDIT: I did later shove a 3/4" piece of wood under one leg 'foot'. This created a teeter totter action. I rechecked the centering to see if that created any twist. It did not!. I conclude from that that floor flatness does not matter(as long as the teetering dues not present a problem). A different opinion than previously espoused by me!!

To answer the original question in the first post, the ext table top was not co-planer with the main table top.

If it was, then one or both of the spt mounts are cocked(bores not perpendicular to the main table top).

The SPT clamp if not adjusted properly can cock the mounting tubes in the bore(s). The ends of the grooved clamp handles must NOT contact the casting. Proper clamping is achieved by the internal screws pressing both the tubes against the bore walls.

I was thinking about this last night, since I am one of those who has a not so level garage floor. If you have a decent utility trailer with flat bottom you might be able to put the Shopsmith on the trailer for the final adjustment of the legs and tubes. Just an idea.
