Ise confused by the question.

There are three PTOs. The quill, the rear main shaft, and the idler shaft.

Driving SPTs etc. is what places limits on the length. Retention of the carriage and main table restricts shortening too much.

Also Shorty/Mini are rather loosely defined.

So to answer the question requires the intended use be explicitly defined.

i.e. Disk sanding with/without the carriage and table, or just an aux table and what SPT on the other end.

Looking at image DSCF1279.jpg...that is about the cleanest shiniest headstock I've ever seen. (Now most I have seen were on Craigslist...)

The primary controlling factor is whether or not you intend to use the Carriage and Table. I cut off 16". I use the Shorty primarily as a drill press and power module for the belt sander. However, I could use it as a full service sanding station, a table saw or a drill press. It could also be used to power the jointer or lathe.

I have a Power Station also but I would readily give it up for a Mini.

My thought process was to leave it wide open as to get some ideas on what others are doing with their machines. So it could be mini/shorty, with carriage or without. Any configuration ideas that anyone has.

That head stock is from my 510 bought new from SS in 1994. The 510 has morphed into a MK 7 model 520.
